We haven’t done a Jolt introduction for a while, so if you’re a regular reader you can skip this. But before you do, we want to say a massive thank you to the thousands of readers who give us a consistent 50%+ open rate for every single post we make. That open rate is internet gold, but more importantly, it makes us feel good inside. And that’s even with the blindingly obvious spelling error in the headline from last time.
At The Jolt, we set out to bring you career wake-up calls, with the only filter that you’d never find any of them in an HR manual. Rather, we set out to bring you tips, tools and candid career perspectives from real-world senior executives who’ve gone through it like you, and come out the other side a tad bit wiser. Stuff that really works. Stuff that makes you stop and think. Hopefully, we’re still doing that for you today.
For this weeks Jolt, we got caught unawares. Sometimes, the internet of things throws you for a loop. Like 100 year old Eric, who popped into our Instagram feed and delivered the mightiest of all Jolt’s that we would never have had the insight or experience to write (at least, not for a good few decades we hope). In the short but poignant interview that we’ve posted below, Eric simply said this:
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift”.
Dang it if that doesn’t sum up why we created The Jolt in the first place. And yes, we got a tear in our eyes too. It’s kinda hard not to.
Regular readers will know that we’ve written a lot about the power of action to drive your career and life. Action is the sauce. It’s the only sauce. And it’s not even a secret one. Action is available to us all, democratized like air.
Today is all we will ever have to take action.
Action doesn’t take skill. It doesn't need a big brain to make action happen. You don’t need exuberant talent. And you don’t need stacks of cash. Even when the future appears more daunting than a swarm of bees coming after your anxiety jam, action always wins.
Pick up the phone. Send the email. Book the meeting. Make the pitch. Ask for the raise. Apply for the new job. Raise the hand. Have the hard conversation. Go to the plate. Get in the ring.
Bet on you.
Today is the gift.
